Skates Family 2014 ~ Olivia Act Recipient

I met the Skates family at Spitzer In Harrisonburg, VA for an indoor family shoot in January. This was my first time shooting in Spitzer so I was definitely a bit nervous. It’s always intimidating shooting another artist, even if you don’t share the same medium. Luckily, Sharon has the sweetest personality and put me at ease quite quickly. Heck, her whole family is full of kindness, that momma preaches it.

Sharon, actually won this session through a call for nominees for the Olivia Act. The Olivia Act was created by a photographer that photographed a family who lost their child in the Sandy Hook tragedy just a few weeks before the shooting took place. I learned from my very first paid session just how important those photographs are once someone is gone. No matter how quickly our minds fade, those photos will always be there to remind us. Gives me goosebumps.

Sharon, who is a survivor in every sense, was so deserving of this session. She is a local, thriving and AMAZING cake artist at Custom Cakes by Sharon. You can find her beautiful creations on Facebook here and OH MY GOODNESS they are yummo. She is a cancer survivor, relay for life raiser, kid advocator, charity giver, music lover, fellow Art Lotto’er, community supporter, awesome chick. I’m so thankful for the time I got to spend with this wonderful family.
